Years of resentment were like heavy chains weighing me down.
You can know that you have eternal life through Jesus Christ, God's Son. And you can be set free like I was from the burden of unforgiveness. God wants your heart. He wants you to care more what he thinks than anyone else. Pray and ask him for eternal life by placing your faith in Jesus. Not just for now but from now on. Tell Jesus you need his righteousness because yours isn't enough and that you are trusting him for eternal life from this day forward. Ask God to free you of the weight of your hurts and unforgiveness toward others and don't stop asking until you are free! I believe he loves you and wants this! The Bible says He is faithful and he will do it.
I used to be very bitter toward my mother. I resented her so much for so many things as I was growing up and even as an adult. This bitterness was so deep that I thought I would never feel free from it. It was eating me alive. One thing God says that I have known is that if we don't forgive, he won't forgive us. I knew I was totally stuck.
One day I began crying out like I had so many times before. But this time it came from so deep inside me and with such urgency I cried out for him to remove this bitterness from me and ENABLE ME to forgive my mom. I felt something different. I can't explain it but I felt lighter. I knew I was at least 85% freer than I was before. After that I was thinking about something I hadn't thought about in years...calling her. I was going to do it but she beat me to it. About 3 days later, she called me. God is so faithful. He gave me power to do something I couldn't do on my own.
That was like 7 or 8 years ago. My mom and I are very close now. And as a bonus, she has even apologized for some of the things that hurt me. But that wasn't necessary for me to forgive her.
Since I've forgiven my mom, I am so much freer than I had been for years. I didn't realize how my bitterness had affected my own parenting of my daughters and other relationships too. God loves me and has given me the gift of sharing in the forgiveness Jesus has for all of us through his sacrifice on the cross.
When I was holding onto my resentment, I couldn't even talk to my mom. She would call and I wouldn't answer. I was even in the hospital once and she wanted to come see me but I refused to let her come. Now you can't keep me away from spending what time we have left together. She lives far away but I go see her as much as I can. God's power transformed our relationship.
God's power and love is there to transform us in ways we never thought possible. I'm so thankful for his love. The first thing was I had to know him through Jesus his Son. I had been a Christian for years honestly. But I never cried out from such a deep and sincere place in my heart. It says that he is a rewarder of the one who diligently seeks him.
