Wrongly Driven
Driven to serve self, redeemed to be driven to serve Him
I was a driven, self centered, competitive individual
I wanted to play Soccer but there wasn't a team that I knew of, so I went to the Dallas Tornado soccer team's office and told them I wanted to play. They gave me a schedule with my "team" on the schedule. I went back to the high school and recruited 10 others to play. Our first practice was our first game. That drive shifted to girls in college. Let's just say I used the same drive and competitive spirit to get what I was looking for in those relationships.
When I graduated from college I went directly into pilot training in the Air Force. Even though I was a driven, self centered, and competitive, God extended grace to me. How? One of my classmates asked me to go with him to a Bible study on base. In that study I was out of my element. The others in the study talked about how Jesus was leading them. I did not have that experience. So, confronted with the reality that Jesus was more than fire insurance but wanted me to follow Him; I learned through that study how to be sure that I had eternal life..
Jesus then, repurposed my drive and competitiveness and focused me on getting to know Him and helping other to know Him through the Word of God.
Within the next six months I was leading 7 Bible studies a week, teaching Sunday School at the base chapel, and going to church 3 - 4 times a week.
While I do not recommend doing what I did, the Lord used that time in the Word to show me without question that I had eternal life with Him and would go to heaven when I die.
