Helpless But Not Hopeless...
As I lost complete control of my car, there was only one reaction I could have...either helplessness or hope. I am grateful that I have hope in eternal life!
I'm glad I know I have eternal life because I now have hope that only comes from a relationship with Christ.
So many times we hear the reaction that people have when confronted with a life-threatening situation: "My life flashed before my eyes!" A few years ago on a rainy evening, I was travelling on the highway. As I attempted to make a lane change, my car began to hydroplane! I slid across three lanes of busy traffic, off the shoulder, and down over the embankment. The whole time I was trying to correct my trajectory by steering and breaking. There was nothing I could do to change the inevitable...I was helpless. Once I came to a stop, I evaluated the situation and noticed that there was only about a fifty-foot opening on the shoulder between a guardrail and a major signpost. I realized that I had slid off at that very location, not to mention never touching a single car on the way across all those lanes! God had spared me from a potentially life-threatening outcome.
What was even more impactful to me, though, was that I did not have that warning in my heart or mind of my life flashing before my eyes. I am confident in my eternal life so much so that my reaction was not the fear of death. Life-threatening situations on earth are only physical...there is no such thing as an eternal life-threatening situation once you know Jesus.
