The times in my life I have tried to do things on my own, without Christ, I have felt like the life has been sucked out of me.
I was doing things and thinking I was seeking God but in the end it was to achieve those things (a good grade, certain relationships, wealth). I was tricking myself into thinking that I was "properly motivated" and was doing all these activities to glorify him, when I was really doing them for me.
